The Right is Wrong Again on ALEC

Right is Wrong again!

The right spent millions and millions and millions of dollars lying in radio and TV campaign ads in Wisconsin – but when the left decides to use the radio to finally grab people’s attention about what is happening about ALEC (finally!) the right gets nasty.

This editorials main message is - you lefties - get off our right wing main stream media!!!!

Color of Change, a left wing attack group founded by former White House Green Jobs Czar Van Jones, is on a mission to smear the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC is a 30 year-old non-partisan membership association for “conservative state lawmakers who shared a common belief in limited government, free markets, federalism, and individual liberty.” As a result of the organization’s successful assistance to lawmakers in state legislatures it has made them the target of liberal smear campaigns.

Left wing groups are attacking ALEC by intimidating ALEC’s corporate donors who have benefited from conservative organization’s work over the years.

The main paragraph that this writer is bitching about is this one from a Color of Change radio ad:

Woman: They're funding an organization called ALEC...the American Legislative Exchange Council? It's attacking the rights of black folks, latinos, and workers in states across the country. It spread the shoot first law that protected Trayvon Martin's killer and laws that suppress the black vote.

Is that a lie- no?
Is it racist – based on the voter statistics out there – no!
Is it FACTUAL – Hell yes!

At the end of the article the writer ends with this quote:
Niger Innis of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sent a statement in response to the Color of Change ad:

"I am offended by the race mongering tactics of those engaged in a cynical politically motivated attack against ALEC. The fact that they use flagrantly ethnic stereotype voice overs in their racist ad campaign is disgusting. But what is most troubling to me personally is that this crass race mongering intimidation will be successful with cowards within corporate America. The patients are now truly ruling the asylum."

Just cause the name includes the words "racial equality" doesn't mean this organization leans to the center or the left - this is a right wing organization
- didn't use to be - but it is now!!!!

Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) was originally a leading civil rights organization that has more recently aligned with conservative think tanks and anti-environmental campaigns (e.g. see Roy Innis).

In 1993, James Farmer -- who founded the organization in 1942 -- said, "CORE has no functioning chapters; it holds no conventions, no elections, no meetings, sets no policies, has no social programs and does no fund-raising. In my opinion, CORE is fraudulent." [1]

Against gun control
In February 2009, CORE joined the Independence Institute, Institute for Justice, Constitutional Accountability Center and others, in submitting a "friend of the court" letter in favor of the National Rifle Association's lawsuit against the City of Chicago's and the Village of Oak Park's handgun bans. The lawsuit, before the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, refers to the U.S. Supreme Court's June 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which overturned Washington, DC's ban on handguns. [16]

"Stop the war on the poor" pro-drilling campaign
CORE received $250,000 in funding from ExxonMobil from 2003-2005[10]. CORE's Niger Innis said the group favors "government spending on oil shale, coal and drilling on the continental shelf and throughout Alaska," because "when these resources are developed ... that is going to have a direct impact on the price of fuel."

Oh my……………………………

But the good news is Jim Hightower did a short snip yesterday that included this:

The American Legislative Exchange Council is the corporate-financed bill mill that thinks up reams of anti-labor, anti-consumer, anti-environment, anti-democracy, and other anti-people laws favored by its corporate funders. It then works with Republican law makers in state legislatures to introduce about 1,000 of these cookie-cutter bills every year in statehouses all over the country. Until recently, ALEC largely operated clandestinely but such watchdog groups as Center for Media and Democracy, Color of Change, and Nation magazine have now outed it as the insidious force behind some of America's most-extreme, right-wing legislation.

By not only exposing the raw ugliness of the front group's agenda, but also naming its corporate backers, the fiesty watchdogs are producing a rush of brand-name, Fortune 500 firms fleeing ALEC.

The flood doors are open – righties
The worms are out of the can– righties
The cat is out of the bag – righties.

Oh my……………………………
